January 19, 2006 | Author: Ibex Marketing
A 50" TV takes up a lot of space, no matter what technology you use. And they get pretty heavy; a plasma panel that size can weigh 100 pounds or more. Imagine an HDTV that disappears when you're not watching it. It can be done. Instead of using glass substrates to create the panels, you can use plastic that is thin and flexible. In theory at least, you could then...

How to Make a Fortune in HDTV

January 17, 2006 | Author: Ibex Marketing
One of my favorite jokes goes something like this: Q: How can you make a small fortune in the HDTV business? A: Well, first you start with a large fortune, and .... Given the steep competition between technologies, and between manufacturers within the same technology segment, many business strategies seem to be a race to see who can lose the most money the fastest. Competition for retail customers is also...

CES 2006: Watching a Supernova

January 11, 2006 | Author: Ibex Marketing
Sometimes a little rejection is a good thing. And sometimes a lot is even better! While traipsing around the various mammoth exhibit halls at the Las Vegas Convention Center, I passed the DNP exhibit. DNP is Dai Nippon Printing, and is one of the leading makers of display screens for front projectors. I got a chance to see their Supernova screen in person. The screen is different from most in...

The plant builds CRTs for use in televisions, sold under a variety of brand names including Panasonic. Declining sales for CRTs in the face of the rising popularity of flat-panel LCD and plasma models led to the decision, and the plant is slated to close in February, 2006....

Brillian Bundles Tune-Up

December 2, 2005 | Author: Ibex Marketing
Some of you may remember the early days of color TV. There was endless fiddling with the controls; people on the screen seemed to suffer from apoplexy, then jaundice, and then apparent sea sickness as you changed from channel to channel. Fortunately, color fidelity has been solved fairly well (even though engineers still quip that NTSC stands for "Never Twice the Same Color"). But as we move to high-end HDTV...
