Yesterday, TiVo announced plans that will let subscribers access YouTube content directly through a TiVo DVR. To take advantage of this feature when it becomes available later this year, you will need a Series3 DVR (which includes the new TiVo HD) and a broadband Internet connection. You will be able to search and watch the YouTube content directly on your television set. Naturally, the content will not be in HD as YouTube doesn’t support high resolution clips, but that doesn’t seem to deter people from watching hundreds of millions of clips each day.
On the plus side, this is one more inch for the IPTV camel’s nose moving under the home television tent. TiVo is where it is today because they understand how important it is to make it easier for their customers to watch television. On the downside, this remains a “walled garden” approach, since you’re limited to YouTube clips. It’s a great start, but we need to get even more options that make it easy to watch video from the Internet on televisions. Stay tuned….
