Okay, it’s not just me. According to an entry in the DisplaySearch blog, UK’s Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has decided that Samsung’s advertising campaign promoting “LED TV’s” is misleading, and has to be changed. (DisplaySearch was one of the first groups that agreed with me that it was misleading to call an LCD TV with an LED backlight an “LED TV”.)
So the ASA has ruled that “because the ads were ambiguous and did not make clear how the TVs utilised the LED technology, the ads were likely to mislead.” As a result, Samsung will have to revise its television and magazine advertisements, at least for the United Kingdom markets.
From where I stand, this is a clear win for the consumer. I now hope that Samsung and Toshiba choose on their own to stop using the term “LED TV” in the rest of the world markets. If you agree, please drop them a line and let them know what you think.
