Toshiba has been one of the few companies to champion the combo LCD TV design, which builds a DVD player into the screen. It’s convenient and space-saving, and makes a lot of sense in settings where countertop real estate is at a premium, such as most kitchens. And now, the new 19LV612U 19″ model comes with a case designed to match the stainless steel decor favored for refrigerators and other major kitchen appliances these days. It also would be convenient in a college dorm room for a student who wants something a bit stylish.
(I still think that stainless is no fun for a refrigerator. Magnets won’t stick to most stainless steels, so how are you supposed to post your family photos and grocery lists on a stainless steel refrigerator?)
The panel is actually 18.5″ diagonal, and has a Wide XGA resolution — 1,366 by 768 pixels — which is appropriate for a screen this size. At the distances most people will watch this in the kitchen, you wouldn’t be able to see the difference between this and a 1080p screen. And it’s EnergyStar compliant, so you will be saving energy with it. The model is scheduled to ship in September with $349.99 list price.
