Netflix has announced that is starting to roll out an app for select Android smartphones so that subscribers can stream content over their phones. This adds to the support already available for iProducts and Windows Phone 7 devices.
Here are the five Android phones that are supported now:
HTC Incredible with Android 2.2
HTC Nexus One with Android 2.2, 2.3
HTC Evo 4G with Android 2.2
HTC G2 with Android 2.2
Samsung Nexus S with Android 2.3.
The reason that there aren’t more devices on this list is “the lack of standard streaming playback features that the Netflix application can use,” according to the Netflix post. This means that more testing is required for each specific model, and that adds to the development time and costs. The Android is rapidly growing in popularity, however, so I expect that pressure will build for Google to come up with a solution that developers will be able to implement more easily.
I also expect that this additional support will increase video watching on phones. Netflix streaming has grown rapidly on computers and connected televisions, and it will likely drive similar growth on phones. I know that I’ll be adding this app to my Incredible today.
