Samsung Ships LED DLP HDTV

According to a report in TWICE magazine, Samsung has started shipping their HL-S5679W rear projection DLP HDTV. This is a significant product, because it is the first to market with an LED light source instead of the conventional UHP lamp.

The conventional lamp needs to be replaced every 3,000 to 4,000 hours, and can cost about $300 or so. This has been one of the points that have made buyers uneasy about choosing rear projection, even though you can buy a lot of replacement lamps for the difference in price between a large rear projection model and an equivalent LCD or plasma screen. The new LED illumination is rated to last at least 20,000 hours, however, so this should eliminate the light as a problem for most buyers. As a bonus, the LED system produces better color than the UHP lamp, and this Samsung screen looks noticeably better than other DLP models with a conventional lamp.

Now all we have to do is sit back and see if this makes any difference to the buyers.
