Network Your HDTVs

Instead of connecting the televisions in your home to a cable or satellite service, or to a rooftop antenna, you may soon just connect them to a computer network. ED Digital is a new company that is introducing its Digitrex line of HDTVs that work with Microsoft’s Windows Media Connect technology so that you can distribute digital entertainment throughout your home.

As I see it, one of the major obstacles to digital home entertainment is the connectivity problem. It’s extremely confusing to know which cable is used to plug what device into which connector on what other device. The beauty of a computer-based media server design is that all the data is sent around on a single network cable, and each device is intelligent enough to know which data is for it. If the manufacturers can actually deliver on this promise, it could make it far simpler for the average user to add and configure home entertainment equipment.

ED Digital is launching at CES in Las Vegas tomorrow, and I hope to see them while I’m here at the show. I’ll keep you posted on what I find out.
