Back in February, I reported on Toshiba’s announcement of the Qosmio notebook that could display 1080p HDTV. Well, they’re ready and will be available on Toshiba’s Web site this week. The Qosmio G35 has a pair of 100 GB hard drives, but the really interesting feature is the HD DVD drive.
At about 10 pounds and $3,000, it’s not a purchase to be taken lightly — literally– but this is much more than your average portable DVD player. It has the horsepower to be a portable HD video editing station. And the price is not that outrageous, when you consider that an HD DVD drive alone costs $500.
I’m still not convinced that time-to-market provides HD DVD a lasting advantage over Blu-ray, which continues to stumble as it tries to leave the starting gate. But the release of products like this will certainly make it harder for Sony and friends to catch up.
