CES 2008: Bye-bye 37″

For my last entry about CES 2008, I’ll say goodbye to the 37″ LCD HDTV market segment. It’s not really gone yet, but don’t expect it to last much longer. Many major manufacturers told me that they will not be coming out with new products in this size.

Why? The reason is simple; the difference in cost between a 37″ LCD HDTV panel and a 42″ one is not that much. The resulting prices for the finished products are too close to make it worth building both; consumers can get the price choice they want with just 32″ and 42″ models. So it doesn’t make economic sense to keep making the 37″ models.

The 37″ model is also a bit of a round peg for the square holes of consumer needs. It’s too small to be a living room display, but too large to be an individual’s TV. So most people can meet their needs just fine without having the 37″ models as an available choice.
