Okay, I expect that few readers will remember how Ed Sullivan always introduced his Sunday variety TV show as being a “really big shoe tonight” (back in the day when TV hosts didn’t have to be gorgeous and under 30). But if Ed’s show was still on the air, you might want to watch it on a Runco CineWall CW-95HD.
You also may not be familiar with the Runco brand. Bought by Planar last year, Runco is the premiere brand for home theater displays. If Sony is the Mercedes of the display world, then Runco is the Ferrari. Or maybe the hand-built custom replica car shop. The brand simply owns the top spot for home cinema installations for buyers who are not encumbered by trivial details such as budgets.
So what is this CineWall CW-95HD? Well, the “95” in the model name refers to the 95″ diagonal screen. And it’s not your typical 16:9 aspect ratio wide screen. No, it uses the 2.35:1 aspect ratio that matches movie film frames. (Runco has had front projectors with this aspect ratio for some years now.) And what about the “CineWall” name? This is a display that gets built into the wall of the room. According to the company, it can be installed in less than 2 hours, and requires less than 33″ behind the screen. The projection engine relies on TI’s DLP technology, though Runco adds all sorts of secret sauce to the mix with its own controlling chipset.
How much does it cost? Like the old saw goes, if you have to ask…. It lists for $49,995 and is only available through Runco dealers. It is scheduled to ship in November, however, so you’ll be able to have one installed in time to watch “It’s a Wonderful Life” like you’ve never seen it at home before!
