HDTV Sounds Great

Some technologies are dominant in a market, but you may not be aware of it. For example, Corning makes more than half the glass used in LCD panels worldwide. But here’s a technology that is almost as widely used that you might not know about; nearly two out of every five flat panel TVs sold last year included features made possible by SRS Labs.

Never heard of them? SRS Labs is a developer of surround sound technology. It relies on psychoacoustics to make sounds appear to come from beyond the two speakers of the television. This can give you a richer, fuller viewing experience without the need for a full array of 5.1 channel speakers and a home theater system. Some of the implementations include SRS TruSurround XT and SRS WOW.

Even surround sound technology can’t make a silk purse out of the the cheap, tinny speakers that come with some of the least expensive LCD and plasma HDTVs, but it can make a marked improvement. If you don’t plan to add a separate home theater system to your new flat panel HDTV, take the time to listen to the sound quality, and evaluate the effectiveness of any surround sound features before you make your final choice.
