DirecTV's new portable receiver and display, Sat-Go

On Thursday, DirecTV announced their new “Sat-Go” product. This briefcase-sized device contains a 17″ LCD screen and a DirecTV satellite receiver. Just open it up, point it south at a DirecTV satellite, and you’ll get all your DirecTV programming on the system including premium sports subscriptions. It has rechargeable batteries, and runs on regular household AC current, or 12 volt DC. The main drawback is that it only receives standard definition programming; you won’t get HD content from this system. Sat-Go is available for $1,499 from DirecTV.

This device provides a whole new dimension to tailgating. And I suppose that it means you can hike into the Wilderness to commune with nature and still not have to miss the finale of “Survivor“. It’s not inexpensive, but does mark another dimension in the industry’s attempt to give consumers the control to watch what they want, when they want, and where they want. Could Sat-Go become the new equivalent of the 60s’ transistor radio? Stay tuned.
