At least one major display company sees a tie between HDTV and video gaming. Samsung is a worldwide sponsor of the World Cyber Games, and has signed an agreement to provide displays and other devices for all WCG events in the US. Clearly, the company sees these as worthwhile opportunities to show off their HDTV models and other products.
As the next generation of 1080-capable (either 1080i or 1080p) game consoles take hold, it’s becoming clearer that there is a large segment of the gaming market that has the money to get a large screen display on which to play their games. I haven’t seen any figures yet that track how many HDTV sales have been driven primarily by gaming, but I suspect that it is more than many people would expect. So I expect that we may see a bump in sales when the PS3 finally ships. Stay tuned.
