On Friday, Mitsubishi announced a new line of HDTVs. These include 1080p DLP rear-projection TVs in 57- and 65-inch sizes that have with a six-color wheel that increases color response. New 52- and 62-inch rear projection LCD TVs offer 720p in the 531 Model series. Direct view-LCD panels have 1080p resolution, and come in 37- and 46-inch sizes. And two new 1080p DLP rear projection models offer a huge 73-inch diagonal screen. The company also demonstrated their DLP rear-projection system that uses laser-illumination, but did not release a commercial product based on that design.
Mitsubishi is one of the most technology-agnostic display companies, offering LCD, plasma, and rear-projection designs using DLP and LCD imagers. This set of announcements indicates that the company sees their future in the bigger display sizes; perhaps the competition among smaller sizes has made it more difficult to make money in those segments.
