Is IPTV for Real?

Verizon is making news by rolling out its Fios TV service in various test markets around the country. But many people don’t realize that IPTV — television over the Internet — is already well-established in some places. “now Broadband” is a service based in Hong Kong that serves more than 500,000 subscribers, mostly in southeast Asia.

The service offers more than 80 channels, including CNN, HBO, Disney Channel, CNBC, ESPN, and other familiar cable channels. It’s not inexpensive, but it does offer an alternative to cable and satellite where you have broadband service available.

The “single-pipe” design of bringing television content into your home on the same wire that handles your telephone and Internet access is an appealing concept, and seems to have a lot of demand. I expect consumers to go for this combination service in a big way once it becomes more familiar, especially if they see a net savings over separate services.
