IPTV — Internet Protocol TV — holds out the promise of “what you want to watch, where you want to watch it, when you want to watch it.” And it continues to be the hot topic of the year. The latest development is a new dramatic series developed by CBS and sponsored by Pontiac. The startling detail about the show that started airing this week is that the episodes are 40 seconds long. (The first episode aired last Tuesday, and was longer, with an epic length of 60 seconds.)
Yes, folks, you read that right. The time of these episodes are measured in seconds, not minutes. “The Courier” is about a man trying to uncover clues in time to rescue his kidnapped wife. The seven episodes will run in prime time over a nine day span, ending February 1.
And here’s the tie to IPTV; right after an episode airs, it will be available for viewing on cell phones using Verizon’s VCast, and online at the CBS Web site.
So here’s a glimpse at what I think may be the brave new world of personal entertainment: freely-distributed content that relies on product placement by the major sponsor, available on your computer and mobile devices. I’m excited to see what comes next!
