Okay, CES 2006 ended more than two weeks ago, and I’m finally getting to this story… which should give you some sense of how important I think it is in the grand scheme of things. But here goes: Panasonic showed a prototype 103″ plasma 1080p HDTV.
Yes, this is gigantic, and an impressive feat. The panel is about 7.5 feet wide and four feet tall. That’s bigger than a bed mattress, bigger than a door. Yes, it’s big.
And it’s one whole inch larger than Samsung’s 102″ plasma panel.
Maybe I’m just getting jaded, but I find it difficult to get excited about this inch. It’s a 0.98% increase. I have no doubt that it’s difficult to make a plasma panel this large, but I just don’t find this increment to be all that impressive. So congratulations to Panasonic for making this giant screen. But I’d like to see some rules like they have for bidding on eBay; you have to top the last “largest” panel by a certain significant amount in order for it to count.
