Pedal to the Metal for DLP HDTV

Texas Instruments continues to dig for display gold on the high-speed race tracks around the country. Yesterday, the company announced a marketing agreement with the International Speedway Corporation that will make DLP HDTV products the official high-definition television at race tracks including Daytona, Taladega, Darlington, and Watkins Glen.

This slipstreams right behind TI’s deal with “Hall of Fame Racing” to place DLP advertisements on their NASCAR race cars.

As I have mentioned before, this is a curious strategy. TI makes the DLP micromirror chips used in many of the most successful front- and rear-projection models on the market, but does not make any displays that you can buy. Yet they are marketing their technology to the end user, in hopes of creating a brand recognition that will encourage buyers to get a DLP product. The racing focus is an attempt to gain mindshare from this enthusiastic and large market segment, and maybe all these racing fans will ask for a DLP HDTV instead of a plasma HDTV next time they walk into an electronics store, even if they don’t know the difference between the two.
